(from the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards for ELA)
“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” – Roald Dahl

Students will continue to receive instruction in recognizing grapheme-phoneme correspondences, and they will begin decoding and encoding longer words. There is a greater focus on finding meaning in text. Students are able to identify which details are more important, a beginning step in identifying relevancy. They are also including a sense of closure in their writing.

To help prepare your child for success in reading and writing, view the Florida B.E.S.T. Parent Guide for English Language Arts (available in English and Spanish).

(from the Grade 1 B.E.S.T. Instructional Guide for Mathematics)

(2) extending understanding of addition and subtraction and the relationship between them;
(3) developing an understanding of measurement of physical objects, money and time and
(4) categorizing, composing and decomposing geometric figures.
